The project was to construct a Memorial to commemorate when, in July 1950, a gas leakage claimed the lives of 11 furnace workmen, 34 men were also greatly affected by the gas. this disaster had a devastating effect in the town. While raising a permanent memorial for this tragedy, the memorial will become the focal point for folk to remember the many others who during the lifetime of the works were caught up in other company tragedies.
The Memorial is between Starbucks and Tesco and is constructed with stone walls (Scott Bricklaying), metal railings (Middleton Forge), with paving, block paving and seating area, landscaped to merge in with the existing landscaping in the surrounding area.
